Hi all,
I will be travelling with my husband (he will be there for work) on March 18-25 to Shanghai and we%26#39;ll be staying at Jianguo Hotel.
Since I will be on my own for most of the week during the day, what is there to do that is safe/close by to the hotel?
I was looking into signing up for a tour or hiring a private tour guide although I%26#39;m a bit hesitant about how safe that would be (I%26#39;m 27 - Canadian born Chinese - not too familiar with cantonese or mandarin, and never been to China).
I love to shop (and eat) so I am assuming that%26#39;s what I will be doing for the majority of the week. My husband is looking for some mp4 players that play video so I%26#39;m going to try to find those for him while he is at work. I%26#39;m also looking to purchase some knockoff purses (unfortunately, I can%26#39;t afford the real thing!)- is there anywhere you%26#39;d recommend near the area?
Any recommendations on tours or tour guides is appreciated
Thanks!
Jianguo Hotel Shanghai - what to do for 5 days?
it%26#39;s good, nearby Xu Jia Hui Area ( which is the shopping area for several big department stores)
There is a temple: Long Hua Temple near your hotel, it%26#39;s the biggest and oldest in Shanghai.
For Mp4, you can buy it in some big department store with a good price.
Fake Market: Qi Pu Rd Market, Ya xin Martet ( which is nearby the subway station)
If you have any more question, you can send me private message :-)
Have a nice trip!

Thanks for all the suggestions CuteMinMin. Are all the places things I can do on my own or do I need a tour of some sort? Since I%26#39;ve never been to China before I%26#39;m not sure if it will be very easy to navigate.
Yes, you hotel is right in Xu Jia Hui, there are lots of shops and places to eat. But as you never been to this side of the world, becareful with the very local food, they may upset your stomach.
I suggest for the first day, go to XinTianDi, not very far on taxi,It%26#39;s a must be place for travellers, and you can get good food to eat, good environment to relax there. There are lots of small stores(expensive) to look around. That will give you a good feeling of Shanghai, than you can go on to do other things. For knockoff purses, LongHua temple is not far from you, also Pearl City in HongMei Lu, JH coated diamond jewelry in Xu Jia Hui. Oh, yes, there is the new Element Fresh in XuJiaHui you can get nice food. If you want to try good Shanghai food, try the Ye Shanghai in XinTianDi, you will love it. It%26#39;s my favorites. by the way, I%26#39;m British Chinese, now living in Xu Jia Hui Area. drop me a line if you need more help. It%26#39;s very safe in Shanghai, don%26#39;t worry. You will enjoy your trip!
Thanks for the suggestions MsGucci!
