We are planning a trip to China in the summer and wonder if anyone could advise us as to how to book our inernal flights as we have found several sights but are unsure how reliable or reputable they are.

you would be better to wait until you arrive and then go to a travel agent such as CTS. To buy flights at short notice is usually no problem and can sometimes get good discounts.
