Hi. We will be in Hong Kong very shortly from Sept. 19 to Sept. 20. Will there be any thing related to the Mid Autumn Moon/Lantern Festival going on then? We will be traveling with our 6 year olds and they would love to buy some lanterns in the shapes of animals and see some festivities.
We will be staying at the HK Disneyland hotel, how long does it take to get into Hong Kong proper from there? Is the train the easiest way or should we take a taxi? There are 5 of us all together.
Thanks, Heather
When do the festivities for 2007 Mid Aut Lantern Fest. Start
Mid Autumn Festival with be on Sep 25 in 2007. Usually there is a major celebration in the Victoria Park known as Lantern Wonderland starting about 1 week before the festival. So I think you should be able to catch it. Victoria Park can be access by MTR train either from Causeway Bay Station or Tin Hau Station.
From HK Disneyland hotel, you need to take a free shuttle bus from hotel to MTR train station (about 15 minutes includung some walk between the shuttle bus stop and the MTR train station), then take MTR train for about 30 to 45 minutes to reach Hong Kong proper. Of course a taxi would be faster (should be within 30 minutes when without crossing harbour, costs about HK$200), and a taxi can take 5 people. When crossing harbour, a taxi could be slower due to jams on the harbour tunnel and costs a lot more. MTR trains or ferry would be better choices to cross the harbour .

Thank you for your fast reply. I have added a night to the iteneray so that we can go to the park and see the lanterns. I am looking forward to trying the moon cakes and see all of the lanterns.
Do they sell the nice paper lanterns, or are they all mostly the plastic animal lanterns for kids? Do you have any rough estimate of how much some of these less expensive lanters cost?
Thanks again, Heather
There are both paper lanterns and plastic lanterns. Those simple paper lanterns can be as cheap as US$1, you should be able to find some in supermarkets, more complicated plastics with light bulbs and sound costs more, say US$3 to 5.
