Question for the local expert (or anyone).
I was going to stay at the Courtyard by Marriott (3-18 Chong Wen Men Waiin) June and have even booked there. I was going to use points, which made it attractive but apart from that the location seems very good.
However, after reading the reviews, it doesn%26#39;t seem that nice of a place and has hostile staff.
Does the local expert have any opinion on this hotel?
Thank you.
Hotel near Tiananmen square
This hotel is 5 km from T square - so that is not so good as it means you won%26#39;t be walking there and will have to always get taxis to and from the main tourist attractions.
I agree the reviews sound pretty ordinary which kind of indicates that because of the points system the staff aren%26#39;t trying hard enough to win you over.
The reviews here also seem to indicate that customers are not receiving the rooms they have actually booked - one person%26#39;s description of their Executive room is entirely different from somebody else%26#39;s.
I would try to reserve at a hotel closer to T sqaure -within walking distance and keep your points for another city.
Hotel near Tiananmen square
Xiantraveller,
I don%26#39;t know Beijing at all but the hotel%26#39;s website says ';Tian An Men Square, the Forbidden City and other imperial sites are just a stroll away.'; which seems rather an exaggeration even by hotel website standards, if it is really 5 km!
I just wanted to check that we are talking about the same place, not another Marriott.
Assuming that it really is so far, do you have any suggestions for hotels near Tiananmen Square, say in the $100-$120 range? We are not looking for a fancy place, just somewher clean and friendly to spend 8 hours a day sleeping!
Thanks for your help.
Yes well that was according to Expedia - and that is what they claim
';Located in the city center, the hotel is 5 km (3 miles) from the Forbidden City and Tiananmen Square and 3 km (2 miles) from Temple of Heaven. ';
The hotel website gives a ridiculous location map - it is useless.
But I have found a very good interactive map and according to this that hotel is actually only about 2/3 km km from T Square not 5 Kilometres. That, depending on roads may only be a brisk 15 -20 minute walk.

Now that is a good map! And thanks for the research.
The hotel%26#39;s distance is one thing but the quality of it is another and I would still love some feedback from the local expert or other locals.
Travellevret?? any thoughts on this or suggestions on another hotel?
yes,its about 5Kms away the Ti`anmen Squre, now that you budget over over 120USD,why not choose Penisular Hotel or Tianlun Dynasty?near the Wangfujing Street, about 15 mins to Forbidden City and Tianmen Squre by walk.
I%26#39;m only one person, so I don%26#39;t have personal experience of a lot of these hotels!
If you want to be located neat Tiananmen Square, you might try the Crowne Plaza. Poster Ellyse recommend Tang Yue Hotel (3*) and Kapok Hotel (4* standard) as being good value choices near Tiananmen if you don%26#39;t insist on an international chain. I%26#39;m considering one of these for family visiting this summer, but haven%26#39;t checked them out myself yet.
Personally, I%26#39;d give up some comfort and location and opt for a courtyard-style hotel that has some local character, like Lusonguan, Haoyuan or Bamboo Garden.
Or if you want to use your points, you could consider the Marriott West. It isn%26#39;t close to anything, but you have to take taxis most places no matter where you stay.
Around Wangfujing Street is probably the the best area to stay for first time tourists. Perhaps you should email the marriot hotel, give them a few interesting questions such as their distance to T square and length of time to walk there and see how helpful they are. I guess people are always more likely to make a complaint than actually extend a compliment. I stayed at the Lee Garden Apartments which was fantastic.
Xiantraveller,
How much is Lee Garden Apartments? It looks great.
Thanks!
Thank you for your replies. I am sorting through all the choices.
