Have just returned my from my 8th trip to Shenzhen. I used to just do the day trip to SZ from HKG but for the last 4 visits have stayed in SZ. The last 2 visits we have stayed at the Metropark Hotel/Serviced Apartments in Dongmen Rd - only 3 minute walk to Dongmen (East Gate) pedestrian shopping area. The standard rooms are very big and modern, complete with own lounge and small kitchen at only NZ$80-90 per room per night depending upon the internet deal/exchange rate at the time. The buffet breakfast is about $NZ9.00 pp and has something for everyone - an excellent start to your busy shopping day. The hotel offfers complimentary transfers to and from LoWu. An inroom massage (great after a long day of shopping) is only Y68 per hour, but there are plenty of places locally that only cost about Y30 per hour. Part of the hotel building is home to a large cluster of fabric retailers, tailors and clothing accessory stores (lace, zips, buttons etc). Most of the people here speak very little english, unlike the retailers at LoWu, but it is a bonus not to be constantly nagged and hassled to buy, ';Missee, Missee ....';. Dongmen pedestrian shopping area is one of our favourite areas and we have a few key, favourite shops that we always return to. Over the years we have built up quite a little friendship with some of the shopkeepers - we even took some kiwi chocolates to our favourite handbag shop this time! I got more clothes made at Lo Wu and had a modern (uv block) roller blind made for our kitchen. Shopping in Shenzhen is always something I look forward to. I recommend it to everyone!!
