Pudong Airport - how long to allow for connection?

We arrive in Shanghai at 7am from the US via Paris and wish to fly on to Beijing on a separate ticket. We would have to clear customs, immigration and all the other things after landing. I%26#39;ve heard that this can take some time.

If I booked the onward flight to Beijing at around 11:00am, would that be enough time to pass through the formalities and get to the next gate?

Can I safely book an earlier flight (say around 10:00am) to Beijing?

If you%26#39;re flying Shanghai Pudong (PVG) -- Beijing, then I think getting the 1000 flight should be fine as long as your international flight isn%26#39;t delayed. It would be a different case if you%26#39;re flying Shanghai Hongqiao (SHA) -- Beijing.

I also take into consideration the airline and aircraft type when making choices though.
